Health & Fitness on any schedule or budget

While most people desire to live a healthy lifestyle, doing so is often easier said than done. Whether you are single, married, have kids, work or stay at home, the demands of life get in the way of pursuits to be physically and mentally fit. If you find yourself struggling in these areas, follow these four tips to develop a healthy and fit lifestyle without sacrificing lots of time and money.

  1. Give Your Home a Face-lift

A cluttered home can leave you feeling stressed and frustrated. Getting your house in order can reduce stress and fatigue and make a big difference in your mental health. When you declutter, you may come across some items that you’re unsure if you want to keep. You can buy yourself some time by putting these pieces in a local storage facility. San Diego has a variety of available units; you can book a 5’ x 5’ unit for under $60 per month.

You can also create a home environment that promotes healthy living by cleaning, adjusting the temperature, changing lights, and adding a plant in each room. Designate an area to enjoy solitude or meditation. This can be as simple as a corner of the living room or as elaborate as a spare bedroom. Spending time alone allows you to improve your mental health by working through feelings, resting, and preparing for the day ahead.

  1. Purchase a Gym Membership

Whether you like cardio, weightlifting, swimming, or classes, joining a gym offers resources for every taste to improve physical fitness, which is a reason so many people have memberships. According to one report done in 2018, Americans visited gyms 6.7 billion times during the year. Another advantage is that many offer different memberships, so you can choose one that fits your needs and budget.

Research gyms in your area. After narrowing your list to ones that meet your needs and budget, take a tour to evaluate the facilities and equipment. Some even offer a free visit or class so you can get the full experience before committing.

  1. Mix Up Your Work Routine

Many jobs allow employees little time for physical activity throughout the day. However, making small tweaks to your routine can add more movement throughout your day.

Instead of eating or working during your lunch break, go for a walk inside the office or outside if the weather is nice. Park your car in the spot farthest from the door. Skip the elevator and take the stairs. Small changes like these can make a big impact in the long run.

  1. Make your plate colourful! Include Veggies in Every Meal

Even with a good amount of physical activity, your body needs proper fueling to stay healthy. Veggies are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, but many meals do not include a significant amount, especially if you rely heavily on fast food or frozen meals. Make an effort to include a serving of veggies in every meal. Most grocery stores sell frozen veggies that you can steam in the microwave; this is an affordable and quick option that makes an easy side for lunch or dinner.  Additionally, keep your kitchen stocked with healthy foods and filtered water. The more nutritious food you have on hand, the less tempted you are to eat junk food.

While it can be challenging to make your health a priority, doing so keeps you strong and sharp. Incorporate these schedule- and budget-friendly tips into your routines to maintain vigorous physical and mental health.
