Its that time again, and you don’t want to be late! Our clocks move ahead on hour on April 30th as we SPRING ahead!
Daylight Savings Time was conceived of by Benjamin Franklin in a 1784 series of letters. While different now from its original conception, it has still thrived as a concept because of its suggestion that it can aid in the conservation of energy. During World War I Daylight Savings Time was adopted to conserve fuel by reducing the need for artificial light. Recently research has shown there may be other benefits to Daylight Savings Time.
According to studies published by the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity and the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, children see an increase in physical activity during Daylight Savings Time. Daylight Savings Time benefits the agricultural economy, which is disproportionately disrupted by bi-annual changes in time that upset the synergy between farmers’ schedules and their supply chain partners. Daylight Savings Time benefits the economy, according to a study by JP Morgan Chase, which found that there is a drop-in economic activity of 2.2 percent – 4.9 percent when clocks move back. It was also found that there is research supporting that Daylight Savings Time can be linked to a reduced risk for cardiac issues, stroke and seasonal depression.
Currently the United States has 8 months of Daylight Savings Time. These months begin in November and end in March. There is currently a Bill before the Senate called ‘The Sunshine Protection Act’ that would extend this 8-month period of Daylight Savings Time. The bill would eliminate the changing of clocks to standard time and make Daylight Savings Time all 12 months of the year.
Regardless of whether you see it as a conservation effort, a war tactic, or identify with some of the researched societal and health benefits, Daylight Savings is coming; make sure to prepare. Most digital clocks and electronics automatically change the time, but some clocks may need to be adjusted. Daylight Saving Time will begin on Sunday the 13th of March at 2:00 AM and will “spring forward” one hour at 2 a.m. (GMT/UTC-8) from Pacific Standard Time to Pacific Daylight Time.
