Compass Launches F.O.C.U.S. After-School Program Under Leadership of Joseph Redford
San Diego, CA — Compass is proud to highlight the continued growth of its After-School Program, guided by the F.O.C.U.S. framework—Fostering Opportunity, Confidence, Understanding, and Success—and led by Joseph Redford, After School Program Manager.
The Compass After-School Program provides a structured, engaging, and supportive environment for students beyond the traditional school day. Designed to promote academic enrichment, social-emotional development, creative expression, and leadership, the program supports students primarily in grades K–8 while remaining inclusive of all learners. With older youth encouraged to participate through volunteer and leadership development opportunities within the program.
“At Compass, we believe that consistent, high-quality after-school programming can be life-changing for students and families,” said Robin Martinez, Executive Director of Compass. “The F.O.C.U.S. framework reflects our commitment to helping young people build confidence, develop skills, and stay engaged—while Joe’s leadership ensures these programs are thoughtful, structured, and designed for long-term success.”
At the core of the program is the belief that consistency, encouragement, and access to opportunity help students reach their goals. “Keep the FOCUS. Reach the Goal.” serves as both a guiding philosophy and a daily practice within Compass’s after-school communities.
Joseph Redford brings a well-rounded and thoughtful approach to the program, shaped by his experience as an elementary school educator. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Joseph also holds a teaching credential from National University and spent four years teaching 5th and 6th grade. His classroom experience directly informs Compass’s after-school programming, ensuring activities are developmentally appropriate, engaging, and aligned with students’ academic and social needs.
As After School Program Manager, Joseph is charged with developing and leading Compass’s current and future after-school initiatives across multiple communities. Under his leadership, the program offers homework support, STEM activities, arts, peer mentoring, and community service projects—each designed to support the whole child.
“After-school programs are an extension of both the classroom and the community,” said Joseph Redford, After School Program Manager at Compass. “Through F.O.C.U.S., we’re creating spaces where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired to keep showing up for themselves. When students stay focused and feel encouraged, they’re able to reach goals they didn’t always believe were possible.”
Through the F.O.C.U.S. framework and dedicated leadership, Compass remains committed to empowering youth, supporting families, and building stronger communities—one student at a time.
